Geraint Jones
2 Royal Welsh
Geraint joined the Territorial Army in 2000 aged 17. After graduating from university he volunteered to deploy to Iraq, completing back to back tours of Op Telic 9 and 10. He then volunteered for Afghanistan, deploying with the Armoured Infantry Company in July 2009. Following the tour Geraint remained in 2 Royal Welsh, where he served in Recce Platoon and as one of the battalion’s PTIs. He left the Army in 2012, and started writing soon after.

“I was a gimpy gunner in Afghanistan, and like a lot of other veterans I’ve been blown up by an IED. I tried a hearing claim after I left the service but I was chinned off, the MOD giving me the usual line about how my hearing loss couldn’t be linked to my service. I’m very happy to be working with VfV, who are winning the battle to get veterans what they are entitled to – nothing more, and nothing less. – Geraint Jones”

Noise Induced Hearing Loss Claims

Those serving in the British armed forces often experience noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) during their service, particularly from exposure to loud noises in training exercises and operations, including duties such as operating heavy machinery, participating in live fire exercises, or working near aircraft.
NIHL typically affects the inner ear, leading to symptoms that may include:
- Ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Difficulty understanding speech
- Muffled hearing
If you think you have suffered noise-induced hearing loss, you may be entitled to compensation.
Author & Voice for Veterans
Geraint’s first book was a collaboration with international bestseller James Patterson, and was published in 2016. Since then Geraint has penned more than twenty military-themed books, including four on Afghanistan, and two on the Second World War – Voices of Victory was a Sunday Times Top 10 Bestseller in 2025, and D-Day: The Unheard Tapes, was a Sunday Times Number 1 Bestseller in 2024. Geraint’s books put the experiences of ‘ordinary soldiers’ at the fore, telling the stories of Britain’s battles in the words of the men and women who fought them.
Geraint has also written for TV and film. MVP, which he co-wrote with former US Army Green Beret, Nate Boyer, was produced by Sylvester Stallone and Braden Aftergood. MVP tells the story of how veterans and athletes face many of the same challenges when the uniform comes off. Every veteran portrayed in MVP was played by an actual veteran, and many more were involved behind the camera. It has since been screened at bases all around America with the aim of preparing service personnel for their transitions to civilian life.
Geraint is the host of the Veteran State Of Mind and War Story podcasts. He has interviewed service personnel from all over the world, including veterans of the Second World War, Vietnam, and many recent conflicts.

FAQs
If you relate to any of the FAQs, or want to find out more get started here.
You don’t need to be certain. Many veterans don’t realise the extent of their hearing damage until tested. Part of the claims process includes an audiology test, which will confirm whether you have hearing loss.
Claims can only be made for service after May 1987. This is because Crown Immunity protects the Ministry of Defence from claims for injuries before that date. If you joined in 1986 and served until 1995, you may still claim for the period after 1987. This law changed following the case of Smith V Ministry of Defence.
Yes, you may still be able to as long as you served in the UK Armed Forces. Each case is assessed individually and if your case has merit, your claim can proceed even if you’re based abroad.
Yes. Having a War Pension or Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) award does not prevent you from pursuing a separate civil claim, including if you have already been rejected for AFCS.
The legal firms we work with operate under Conditional Fee Agreements. Your case will be covered by an after the event (ATE) insurance policy. This insures you against loses and allows your case to be no win, no fee. If your claim is unsuccessful, all legal costs are covered and you don’t have to pay a penny. If your claim is successful a fee of 25% (including VAT), along with the insurance premium, will be deducted from your final settlement to cover your solicitor’s costs
